William Troost-Ekong, captain of Nigeria's Super Eagles, expressed immense pride in his team's spirit, emphasizing that the “Naija spirit can’t be broken.” This declaration comes after the squad endured a distressing 15-hour ordeal at Al Abaq Airport in Libya. The players arrived in the North African nation on Sunday, ready for their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying match against Libya's Mediterranean Knights, scheduled for Tuesday.
The challenging experience, marked by poor treatment and significant delays, ultimately led the team to boycott the match. Reflecting on the ordeal, Troost-Ekong tweeted, “BACK HOME SAFE & SOUND. Proud of this team, NAIJA SPIRIT can’t be broken.” He noted that despite the challenges thrown their way, the team has shown resilience, stating, “It’s in our blood to overcome.”
The captain has been a part of the Super Eagles for over a decade and mentioned that this experience, unlike any other he has faced with the team, has strengthened their bond. The players returned to Nigeria, determined to regroup and focus on future matches.
