Nobel Laureate Prof. Wole Soyinka expressed surprise at reaching 90 years during the 2024 edition of his International Cultural Exchange Programme at his ARI residence in Abeokuta.
Reflecting on his life, Soyinka emphasized his initial motivations as a writer to correct narratives from his youth. He clarified a historical incident, stating he "sneaked" into a radio station during military rule to retrieve public property, not break in. Soyinka criticized Nigerians for faulting the state while neglecting personal introspection.
Addressing societal issues, he attributed crimes like kidnapping to personal greed rather than poverty. He commended Governor Abiodun for environmental efforts around his residence, reaffirming his commitment to Nigeria.
The event included a national essay competition, with 383 students participating and Alabi Oluwanifemi emerging as the top essayist.
