The Federal Government has assured Nigerian workers that the implementation of a new minimum wage will commence from May 1, 2024, despite ongoing negotiations by the Tripartite Committee On National Minimum Wage. Speaking at the May Day celebration in Abuja, the Minister of State Labour, Nkeiruka Onyejeocha, emphasized that workers will not suffer any setbacks due to the delay in finalizing the new wage structure.
While acknowledging the regrettable delay in concluding negotiations, Onyejeocha assured workers that extensive consultations are underway to expedite the process and ensure the timely release of the new minimum wage document. This announcement comes as a relief to many workers who have been eagerly anticipating improvements in their wage standards to cope with the rising cost of living.
In a separate address presented by Vice President Kashim Shettima at the Workers' Day event in Abuja, President Bola Tinubu praised the invaluable contributions of Nigerian workers to the nation's growth and development. Tinubu reiterated the government's commitment to receiving and considering the recommendations put forth by the committee on the new national minimum wage.
Furthermore, Tinubu emphasized that the current administration's reform agenda is squarely focused on advancing the progress and prosperity of Nigeria.
