27-year-old Imo woman Oluchi Nzemechi was arrested for stabbing 31-year-old lover Kelechi Nzemechi to death in dispute over 250 million rupiah internet fraud proceeds from Indonesian victim they allegedly defrauded.
A 27-year-old woman in Imo State, Nigeria has been arrested for allegedly stabbing her partner to death following a heated dispute over proceeds from an internet fraud scheme they were involved in, according to police. The suspect, identified as Oluchi Nzemechi from Ikeduru LGA, confessed to stabbing her 31-year-old lover Kelechi Nzemechi in the upper body with a kitchen knife during an argument on Sunday, the Imo State Police Command stated.
Nzemechi told authorities she attacked her partner because he failed to give her an agreed cut from 250 million Indonesian rupiah (around USD 17,000) they had allegedly obtained through defrauding a victim in Indonesia.
"I had a heated argument with the deceased on Sunday for failing to give me a cut of an alleged 250 million Rupiah they fraudulently obtained from a victim in Indonesia," Nzemechi stated, according to police. "During the argument, I used a kitchen knife and stabbed him in the upper part of his body."
In a chilling admission, the suspect revealed she tried covering up the deadly crime by leaving a menacing note beside her slain partner's body stating: "You think you can eat my money and go free, I am baba for the boys, I am coming for your wife and your child including your family."
Nzemechi, who had been living with the victim since 2019 and had one child together, initially fled the scene but was swiftly apprehended, authorities said.
The disturbing case has thrown a spotlight on the prevalence of sophisticated cyber fraud schemes known as "yahoo-yahoo" operating in the region, often luring youth with promises of quick wealth.
As the investigation continues, police are working to recover and return the alleged 250 million rupiah fraud proceeds to the Indonesian victim, Okoye added.
