A deadly Boko Haram attack on Mafa village in Yobe State left 87 dead, with 37 bodies prepared for burial. The attack, believed to be a reprisal for suspected informants, occurred during afternoon prayers. Local authorities are under pressure to improve security in the face of rising insurgent violence.
In a tragic escalation of violence in Yobe State, 37 bodies have been prepared for burial following a brutal attack by suspected Boko Haram militants on Mafa village. This attack, which occurred last Sunday during afternoon prayers, resulted in the deaths of 87 individuals, with the deceased being gathered for mass burial.
The raid targeted worshippers as they completed their Asr prayers at a local mosque. Witnesses reported that the attackers separated the elderly and herders before opening fire. A survivor recounted narrowly escaping, noting the absence of security personnel during the attack. He highlighted the lack of protective measures despite ongoing military operations in the region.
The bodies of the deceased are currently at the Babbangida General Hospital, with the burial set for 10 a.m. at the Emir’s palace in Tarmuwa. Yobe State's Deputy Governor, Idi Barde Gubana, will represent Governor Mai Mala Buni at the burial, as the governor is out of the country on official business.
Local sources indicated that the assault may have been a reprisal, fueled by suspicions that some community members were providing information to security forces about the insurgents. This incident underscores the ongoing insecurity and the dire need for effective protective measures for vulnerable communities in the region.
