A tragic incident occurred at Government Girls Science and Technical College in Potiskum, Yobe State, when a classroom collapsed, resulting in the death of one student and injuries to several others. The incident happened around noon on February 20, 2025, as students prepared for their lunch break.

Emergency responders and school authorities quickly arrived at the scene, rescuing those trapped under the debris and rushing them to the Specialist Hospital in Potiskum for urgent medical attention.

Bukar Aji, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry for Basic and Secondary Education, confirmed the unfortunate event and assured that the injured students were receiving the necessary medical care. He also stated that the Yobe State Ministry of Housing and Urban Development had been contacted to investigate the cause of the collapse.

While expressing condolences to the bereaved family and sympathizing with the injured, Aji reaffirmed the government’s commitment to ensuring the safety of school structures across the state to prevent future occurrences.
