Zimbabwe head coach Michael Nees took a swipe at Nigeria’s World Cup qualification hopes after his team secured a 1-1 draw against the Super Eagles in Uyo on Tuesday.
Despite dominating possession and creating multiple chances, Nigeria struggled to find the net until Victor Osimhen broke the deadlock in the 74th minute. Just when it seemed like the Super Eagles would grab all three points, Zimbabwe’s Tawanda Chirewa delivered a shocker with a last-minute equalizer, silencing the home crowd.
The draw leaves Nigeria in a tough position, sitting fourth in Group C with seven points—six behind leaders South Africa. Zimbabwe, meanwhile, remains at the bottom with just four points.
After the game, Nees didn’t hold back when asked about his team’s qualification chances. With a smirk, he told reporters, “If Zimbabwe is out, then Nigeria is out too.” His comment drew laughter from the Nigerian press, but he doubled down, asking, “You’re laughing? How many points do you have?”
The Super Eagles now have four matches left to salvage their World Cup hopes, but with their struggles in front of goal and a shaky defense, the road ahead won’t be easy.
