A construction site in Herat Karukh district, Afghanistanwas attacked this morning by insurgents killing ten people and injuring lots more. Nine construction workers and a policeman died due to the attack.
The workers were constructing a 52-kilometre (32-mile) road project run by an Afghan-German company and managed by the public works ministry. The road runs from Herat's Karukh district to Qala-i, now the capital of neighbouring Badghis province.
This is one of several deadly attacks across the country overnight and in the morning. It is rumored that one of the attacks was targeted at a former provincial police chief as the insurgents fight to regain territory after foreign forces withdraw.
In another deadly incident, five family members (three children, a woman and a man) were killed in the Marjah district of southern Helmand province when their mini-van struck a roadside bomb.
Another roadside bomb late Friday killed three women in Helmand's Sangin district.
In Farah province in the west, a suicide bomber detonated his explosive vest inside a private medical clinic, killing three people including a local police commander, a provincial government spokesman said.
Civilian casualty is on the increase this year. The United Nations said in its mid-year report that casualties were up 23 per cent compared to the first six months of 2012. Most were caused by roadside bombs, it said.
