10 students lost their lives on Wednesday in a ghastly accident on Sheme-Kankara Road in Kankara Local Government Area of Katsina State when two trucks collided. 4 others were injured.
The accident occurred when a truck conveying the students to Government Day Secondary School in Kankara town collided with an oncoming truck.
The Malumfashi Unit Commander of Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC), Malam Tijjani Muhammad, confirmed the incident.
Muhammad said the accident occurred in the morning when the students were going to school, adding that the truck was also carrying timber. According to him, the truck is coming from Sheme and going to Kankara while the other vehicle was from Kankara going to Sheme junction.
An eyewitness who spoke to newsmen said that the victims were residents of different villages studying at Kankara and boarded vehicles daily on the road. The students were sitting on top of the timber when the accident occurred and logs of timber fell on them.
The rescued victims and the dead were taken to Kankara General Hospital. Meanwhile, Government Day Secondary School, Kankara, had been closed to mourn the dead students.
