Eleven persons were killed on Sunday in Congo in a clash between Congolese police and a group of immigrants from neighbouring Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

Among the victims were three policemen and a former DRC rebel leader, Udjani Mangbama, it said.

The clashes occurred after Mangbama and his men refused to comply when the police took them in for questioning.

Arrested in May 2010 in Likouala, northern Congo, Udjani lived in Brazzaville.

His group is suspected of abuses carried out against Owando residents.

In 2009, in the Equateur province, northwest DRC, a conflict erupted between the Enyeles, led by Mangbama, and the Munzayas.

The two ethnic groups struggled for the management and ownership of the vast fish ponds in the area.

The conflict ended in April 2010 after killing at least 270 people and compelling some 200,000 people to flee.
