Rising star Lupita Nyong’o has won an Independent Spirit award for her role in 12 Years a Slave. She told her audience as she accepted her award “[this is] not a bad way to celebrate my birthday.”
The Kenyan actress turned 31, a day before the Oscars, where she is also nominated for Best Supporting Actress.
The movie 12 Years a Slave dominated the Independent Spirit Awards, where it took five awards.
