On Saturday, the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) held a recruitment drive which resulted in the death of 19 job seekers including 4 pregnant women.
3 pregnant women died in Benin,8 applicants in Abuja, 3 in Minna and 5 in Port Harcourt including a pregnant woman. Dozens others were injured in the stampede and several others declared missing after the exams.
Poor planning by the NIS has been blamed by for the deaths and injuries. In most venues, enough gates weren't open to admit candidates in, so people were forced to squeeze in through very tiny spaces.
In Calabar, applicants were whipped by the NIS in a ludicrous attempt to control the crowd. Several candidates lost their credentials while others went back home with torn clothes.
520,000 applicants participated in the Nigeria Immigration Service recruitment nationwide, only 4556 will be employed.
Meanwhile on social networks, young Nigerians are calling for the resignation of the controller general of immigration and the hash-tag #CGIresign is currently trending.
