The demand for oil wells by the Niger delta leaders has overshadowed other demands. Should the Niger delta leaders have presented better demands? Yes. Here are 2 simple demands Nigerians expected the leaders to make:
1. Speedy passage of the PIB
The Niger delta leaders ate jollof rice at the Aso rock villa and forgot about the Petroleum Industry Bill, which lies abandoned at the National Assembly. If passed into law, the PIB addresses most of the needs of the Niger Delta.
2. Fiscal Federalism
The Niger Delta leaders demanded fiscal federalism but the demand was presented mainly as a side piece to other demands. Fiscal federalism will ensure that the Niger delta, a minority region is nolonger at the mercy of regions with high population.
Fiscal federalism will force states to compete in terms of infrastructure, investment drive and development of the resources in their domain.
