The Director General of the Standard Organization of Nigeria (SON), Dr. Joseph Odumodu has the current level of substandard products imported to the country is 40 percent. He, therefore, called for a law to jail people involved in the importation of substandard products in the country.
He made this call during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja on Sunday. According to him, the agency has seized product worth N4 billion between January and September, and just in the last three days, the agency seized substandard telephone sets worth N350 million.
He decried the situation as something that does not benefit the economy. “I tell you that is not a thing of joy because all these products were imported, paid for with genuine dollars and would be destroyed and they are Nigerian money,’’ he said.
He said the organization now has a new act to prosecute importers of substandard products. He added that the organization is working at jailing at least one of the kingpins masterminding the importation of substandard products in Nigeria.
Odumodu said the target of the organization is to reduce the importation of fake goods into Nigeria to 10% from its current 40% before the end of the year. This he said would be achieved through the integration of SON's certification programme with the Nigeria Integrated Custom Information (NICIS).
