Facebook, formerly known as Thefacebook, was founded in 2004 by Mark Zuckerberg along with some colleagues from Harvard namely: Dustin Moskovitz, Eduardo Saverin, Andrew Mc Collum, and Chris Hughes.

The original plan was to restrict its membership to Harvard Students, but it was later expanded to Boston area colleges, Ivy League, and Stanford University. The success achieved with the expansion of its membership categories further encouraged its management to include students of various universities as well as high Schools.

Once you become a member of the site, you’d have the ability to create your own profile, exchange messages, add new friends, and receive notifications when others update their profiles, share videos, post status updates, and photos. Additionally, you may choose to join common interest groups organized by school or college, workplace, and categorize your friends list into special list such as close friends, or people from Church, mosques, club etc.

As of June 2014, the number of Facebook active users stood at 1.3billion, and these figures show that one in 8 persons have a Facebook account. In February 2012, Facebook held its initial public offering and sold stocks, reaching a market capitalization of $212billion as of February 2015. Currently, Facebook is undergoing innovative changes that will optimize its user’s experience, and it will also make their communication with people and businesses easier. During Facebook’s developer conference, held recently, Mark Zuckerberg and his executives announced new innovative features that will improve the Facebook platform, and they include:

1. Improved communication with businesses within messenger and track your online purchases

Since e-commerce plays a prominent role in buying and selling, Facebook will now have the capability to integrate into e-commerce sites through its standalone messaging app. In the future, you can choose to connect with your Facebook account each time you are making purchases via the web, and you’ll receive notifications about products bought from companies directly to your messenger app. This latest update will be helpful to people who hate receiving multiple emails about order confirmation, shipping information and returns made. Using its messenger app, you’d be able to communicate with businesses directly.

2. Spherical videos on your Oculus VR headset and your news feeds

Videos shot with 360-degree camera technology will soon be supported on Facebook, and the video captured won’t be much different from those captured by Google maps street view. By clicking and dragging on the screen, you should be able to change the perspectives of the videos. Google’s youtube has recently announced support for this latest video format as well.

3. Embed videos everywhere else online once you post it on Facebook

Previously, it wasn’t possible to share videos by embedding it elsewhere once posted online, you could only do so through sharing of links. However, with this latest update, you can easily upload and share your videos via Facebook.

4. You would soon be able to use other apps to reply messages

You can send messages using third party apps such as animated GIF creator Giphy within the messenger app. Previously, you’d have to copy the GIF into a message, to do this, you’d have open the app, open the Giphy and then create a GIF. Compatible multiple third parties now have the means to download their apps directly through the messenger platform.

5. This upcoming Facebook update will give you the ability to control more devices

The management of Facebook says that this upcoming update will give developers the platform to build apps and programs that can control everything from your self-watering plants to your garage doors. Facebook is making its innovative intentions clear with the adoption of the IoT (Internet of things) feature.

6. Comments made elsewhere online will show up in Facebook

You’d have to be careful about passing comments elsewhere online because it will subsequently be updated automatically on your profile as stories posted to Facebook. This new policy is designed to help media companies gain popularity with their content. The first group of companies to test this updates includes; Huffington post, Elite Daily, BuzzFeed and fox sport.

7. The Developer’s Apps will get Analytics

Developers will be provided with free dashboards that will show people interacting with their devices and where they’re coming from.

Facebook has continued to explore ways to make its social media platform relevant, even in the face of competition. However, technology has changed over the last few years as well as the social media platform. Only continuous development and inclusion of relevant innovative features will keep Facebook relevant for some time to come.
