Former Chief of Army Staff, Lt. General Ishaya Bamaiyi has disagreed with the notion that former Head of State, Gen. Sani Abacha looted the country's treasury.
According to him, the story was a creation of the media.
“I am not defending Abacha, I am not saying things did not go wrong,” Bamaiyi said, “what I know is that we sat down and agreed that the monies should be kept in a place so that we can have access to them. I don’t know if something else happened after that period.”
Abacha channeled up to $2.2bn from the Central Bank into several private accounts.
