The 492 delegates to the national conference got their first pay yesterday. Sahara reporters has mentioned that each delegate for the conference has been paid N1.45 million after sitting for a week. The payment was made straight into their bank accounts.
The first week of the national conference has been, to put it mildly, hilarious. The newspapers have been flooded with reports of the delegates squabbling over sitting arrangements, which prayers are acceptable and which are offensive and other similarly mundane issues. They are expected to meet for three months and get paid fortnightly, according to Sahara reporter’s sources.
We read that N7 billion has been made available for the conference and that each delegate will be paid N4 million each month, but it looks like some of the funds will be applied to the secretariat. In spite of the huge amount, in a nation where most state governors refuse to approve the minimum wage of N18,000 per month, the delegates are still haranguing for more money to be shared to their aides.
Sahara reporter’s columnist, Rudolf Okonkwo says satirically, “N1.45 million Naira for a week's job is not bad at all, especially when most of the delegates were just sleeping during their few hours of sitting.”
