A high chief in Akure kingdom, Chief Dada Oyateru, was on Tuesday night murdered before members of his family by unknown gunmen who broke into his house and held the family hostage for hours.

The 83-year-old patriarch, who was the Ayalodi of Akure Kingdom, was said to have been strangled to death at his residence located at Oke-Ijebu area of the city by a three-member gang who disappeared thereafter.

According to the deceased’s junior wife, Mrs Titilola Oyateru, the three armed men broke into the house by 1:00am through the deceased’s room after cutting the burglary proof and held them hostage till about 5 am.

“They pointed a gun at Baba, demanding the money they said he brought home the previous night. He pleaded with them that he didn’t have any money at home and usually didn’t keep money at home too, but they did not believe him. They threatened that they would kill us if we didn’t give them money,” she said.

Titilola recounted that the deceased ought to go for medical check-up at the Federal Medical Centre, Owo on Monday, but could not go because he had no money on him as a result of the recent nationwide strike that paralyzed bank operations and other business transactions.

“He begged them to go with his two cars, that he would go to the bank the following day to withdraw money and give it to them at wherever they choose to collect it, but they insisted that they would kill him if he didn’t give them money that night,” she said.

The junior wife narrated that the bandits tied the deceased with a rope, asked them to lie face down, and then took the life out of the old man by twisting his neck.

She said the attackers then ransacked the whole house, carting away valuables such as laptops, phones, and jewellery and escaped with the deceased’s red Toyota Camry muzzle car.

Crack detectives from the state police command were hunting for the killers when this report was filed yesterday.
