The former US athlete died in hospital near her home in Albany, Georgia, three months after suffering from a bout of stroke.
Alice came to prominence at the 1948 Olympic Games held in London where she won a gold medal in the high jump event.
She bridged the gap between the white and black athletes in her homeland USA,showing that people of different races have equal capabilities in sport, especially then that racism was very rife.
In 2004,she revealed in an interview that she could have won even more Olympic medals, but the Games were not held in 1940 or 1944 because of World War Two.
"Alice Coachman Davis has inspired generations of athletes to be their best and she will be missed," US Olympic Committee CEO Scott Blackmun said in a statement.
