Antonio Guterres, the former Prime Minister of Portugal is expected to become the next secretary general of the United Nations, diplomats have revealed.
Mr Guterres, who led the UN refugee agency for 10 years, was strongly tipped to be appointed to the post.
Russia's UN ambassador Vitaly Churkin on Wednesday announced that Mr Guterres, 66, was the "clear favourite" among other candidates.
A formal vote will take place in the UN Security Council on Thursday to confirm the choice of nominee.
