Argentina Football Association have appointed Gerardo Martino as their new national team manager.

The former Barcelona coach replaces Alejandro Sabella who resigned after his side's 1-0 defeat to Germany in the final of this year’s World Cup tournament in Brazil.

"The Rosario-born coach Gerardo Daniel Martino will take office as the new coach of the national team, succeeding Mr Alejandro Sabella who completed his contract with the AFA after the end of the World Cup Brazil 2014," the Argentina Football Association announced on their official website.

Argentina becomes the second national team that Martino will be managing after his five-year tenure in charge of South American rivals Paraguay.

Martino had a turbulent time in his European sojourn at Barcelona replacing Tito Vilanova and resigned after the Catalans ended the season trophyless.

He will be formally presented as the new coach of Albiceleste tomorrow.
