Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has confirmed that he has no intention of stopping Belgium's Thomas Vermaelen if terms with Manchester United go through.

Although Wenger admitted that he would rather sell him to a club abroad with Barcelona the other club to have shown interest in the Belgian.

Vermaelen is no longer in Wenger's first-team squad, with Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny the preferred choice in defence having formed a central-defensive partnership.

"Manchester United are part of the group of bidders. He could leave," Wenger said.

"We have offers from abroad and ideally I would rather sell him to a club abroad. We're in a position where it's difficult to stand in his way."

Wenger has been active in the transfer market so far, splashing out to bring in the likes of Alexis Sanchez, Mathieu Debuchy and Calum Chambers, and admits more new faces could arrive before the end of the month.

He added: "We have three and a half weeks until the transfer market closes - we could still strengthen, but we have a big squad."
