Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone has been handed an eight-match ban for slapping an assistant referee on the head during last week's Super Cup clash against Real Madrid.

Simeone was sent to the stands in the game, with Atletico Madrid going on to win 1-0 and emerging 2-1 winners on aggregate scores.

In the game at the Vincente Calderon, the Argentine had an altercation with the match officials on the touchline, and he proceeded to pat the fourth official on the head before applauding the referee after he was sent away from the dugout.

The Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) said that he was being punished for four separate acts of misconduct, totalling an eight-match ban from the touchline.

This will not be the first time that Simeone will be facing charges of indiscretion.

He was handed a one-match ban by UEFA for his improper conduct during their Champions League final match in May,incidentally it was also against Real.
