Bayern Munich president Uli Hoeness has been sentenced to three and half years in jail for tax evasion.

Hoeness who has since this week been making appearances in a German court, was on Thursday handed the jail term.

The former German international was originally charged with not paying €3.5 million but he admitted to tax avoidance to the tune of €18.5 million,in what was seen as an effort to avoid going to jail.

His representative argued that he should have escaped punishment having given himself up,but judges said that his confession fell short of full disclosure.

After an examination of documents Hoeness provided to investigators shortly before the trial,it emerged that he owed €27.2 million in total, though he did not dispute it.

Hoeness had kept the funds in a secret Swiss bank account, which was unaccounted for.

The 62-year old came straight from the courtroom to watch the 1-1 draw between Bayern Munich and Arsenal on Tuesday,in the second leg of their Champions League round of 16 tie.
