At least 12 people have been killed, and 48 injured after a lorry rammed into a busy Christmas market in Berlin on Monday night. The driver, whose nationality is unknown, was reported to have fled but was later said to have been arrested by police.

Security sources says that the driver of the truck was an asylum seeker from Afghanistan or Pakistan who had arrived in Germany in February.

The market is at Breitscheidplatz, close to the Kurfuerstendamm, the main shopping street in the city's west.

The crash was labelled as an apparent "terrorist attack" by the White House. National Security spokesman Ned Price said the US condemned the events "in the strongest terms".

Angela Merkel, the German chancellor, expressed her sympathy for the victims of the incident.
