World BlackBerry considers sale of company

Owing to the ever-competitive smart device market, Canadian smartphone maker BlackBerry, are looking at options including joint ventures, partnerships or outright sale of the company.

The committee, which is made up of Timothy Dattels, an investment banker and former Goldman Sachs executive and Blackberry Chief Executive Thorsten Heins, will explore strategic alternatives given the importance and strength of the firms technology.

The decision to weigh possible strategic options arise from the stiff competition against the likes of Apple Inc and phones using Google Inc’s Android operating system and the failure of its new BlackBerry 10 smartphones to gain market traction.

BlackBerry’s new line of devices hit store shelves this year just as the high-end smartphone segment had begun to show signs of saturation. Samsung Electronics Co Ltd recently reported results that fell shy of expectations, while Apple earlier this year reported its first quarterly profit decline in more than a decade.

On the mid- to low end of the market, competition is growing intense, with Chinese manufacturers such as Huawei Technologies and ZTE gaining ground.
