The Motorola G 2014 can be described as a consolidation on the successes earlier achieved with the unveiling of its predecessor, the Motorola G. Both are great budget smartphones designed to appeal to a section of the society, who often crave benefits associated with the use of premium Smartphones and mobile devices but are often constrained by finance. Taking a closer look at the Moto G 2 will reveal that it’s just a slight upgrade on the original Moto G. Certain functionalities such as camera, display and internet network witnessed some remarkable changes. We shall examine the Moto G 2014 under the following subheadings.

Hardware and Design

On a more serious note, if you are familiar with any of the recent Motorola Smartphones, you may have virtually seen all their smartphones, both released and yet-to-be released. I mean, they virtually come in the same design, with the same curved backs, dimpled logos and clear paintings. This Smartphone comes with a more expansive, 5-inches 720p display which churns out quite impressive colors and graphics that make gamers drool over in admiration. Smartphones with bigger screens are often sought after in this part of the world where people, most times, associate smartphones with bigger screens as high-end. But looking at it from a technical perspective, the Moto G 2014 expansive screen size allow apps to appear bigger, but then the increase in screen size makes it less comfortable to hold than its predecessor.

Software

Unlike its predecessor, the Moto G 2014 runs on Android OS v.4.4.4 (kitkat), which is upgradable to V.5.0 (Lollipop), a feat difficult to replicate by budget Smartphones in the same price range. The Moto G 2014 basically features same apps seen on most Android smartphones, but then differentiates itself with the inclusion of proprietary apps such as Motorola Assist, Migrate and Alert apps. Motorola Assist recognizes when you shouldn’t be bothered, especially when driving, sleeping or attending important meetings. It automatically connects your music to Google play when driving, and can also respond to messages by letting senders know you are on the road.

Motorola Migrate, on the other hand, lets you transfer contacts, messages and Calendar events, either from Apple iCloud or other Android Smartphones. Alert, on the other hand, lets you setup notifications for emergency services and preset contacts, which you can reach or broadcast your location to, if are in any form of danger. The Alert app also lets the Smartphone reach out to everyone on your contact list during emergencies with a single tap of a button.

Display

One of the highpoints of the Moto G 2014 is its display, especially when compared with that featured in its predecessor. It boast of an expansive 5-inch, 720p display, which is significantly bigger than that featured in Moto G. However, when compared to its predecessor in the area of sharpness, it didn’t perform as well as expected in this regard. The Moto G 2 seem to spread thin in terms of sharpness because of its bigger display and the fact that it still retained the same number of pixels featured in its predecessor. As a result, it’s less crispy than the original. Despite the slight decline in sharpness, the Moto G 2014 still boast of a more advanced display overall. It comes with a Gorilla Glass 3 protection and it’s clearly offers more space.

Camera

Motorola smartphones aren’t amongst the best smartphones in mobile photography, but seem to hold their own in the low-end, budget Smartphone category. The camera functionality is definitely amongst the major talking points of the Moto G 2. It boasts of an 8-Mega pixel camera - with a resolution of 3264 X 2448 pixels, which a major upgrade, especially when you take into consideration the fact that the Moto G features a 5-mega pixel camera. The photo quality is quite impressive, especially during the day but as nighttime sets in, pictures taken begin to appear grainy, but then its sensors tend to help it get the very best of pictures taken in low-light conditions. Selfie lovers will find the Moto G 2014’s front facing camera quite appealing, as it offers better picture quality using its 2MP camera, especially when compared to the 1.3MP camera featured in the Moto G. The Moto G 2 camera functionality definitely punches above its weight in the budget Smartphone category.

Battery Life

One of the sour points of the Moto G 2014, if any, is the Battery. It basically features the very same Non –removable, Li-ion 2070mAh battery being used by its predecessor. Imagine a Smartphone being upgraded from a 4.5-inch to 5.0-inch display but still packing the same battery featured in its predecessor, I mean, do the math! However, when it came to battery performance, the Moto G 2014 performed creditably well, as it was slightly surpassed by the Moto G when tested using the same benchmark.

In conclusion, the Moto G 2014 is your ideal bet if you are looking a sleek Smartphone in the budget category, especially if you haven’t used the Moto G or similar Smartphones in the past. The price range of the Moto G 2014 varies between N35,000 to N40,000, which clearly puts it in the budget category. Users of the original Moto G may not find the Moto G 2014 worthy of an upgrade. But if you are enthusiastic about photography and large displays, then it’s definitely worth the upgrade.
