10-years after the International Court of Justice (ICJ) ruled that Bakassi, a 1,000-square-kilometre (386-square-mile) patch of Atlantic coastal swamp, was part of Cameroon, not Nigeria, Cameroon has taken full sovereignty over the disputed Bakassi Peninsula.
Nigeria relinquished any hope of legally reclaiming Bakassi last October, when the 10-year period to appeal the ICJ’s ruling expired.
The five-year UN-backed transition period exempted residents in the area, many of them Nigerian fishermen, from paying tax.
Now the Nigerians must also apply for a residence permit or take up Cameroonian citizenship if they wish to remain.
