Police in central Pakistan said on Tuesday in Islamabad that it arrested the second of two brothers, previously imprisoned in connection with cannibalism, after they allegedly ate an infant.
Police Chief Ameer Abdullah said Farman Ali, 37, was arrested in an overnight raid in Darya Khan town in Punjab province.
He said his elder brother Muhammad Arif, 40, was arrested on Monday following neighbours’ complain of a foul smell coming from their house, and recovered the skull of an infant.
Abdullah said Arif admitted during interrogation that two of them had stolen the baby’s body from a nearby graveyard and eaten the flesh.
The police officer said the two brothers would be taken to an anti-terrorism court for indictment.
Abdullah recalled that the brothers were arrested in April 2011 for stealing and eating the corpse of a cancer victim, in a case which shocked Pakistan. They were given a two-year term and released from jail last year.
The brothers were convicted of desecrating graves because Pakistan does not specifically outlaw cannibalism.
The incident triggered anger across the country and a mob demolished the brothers' house at the time
