Nigeria - A Chinese automobile firm, Guangzhou Automobile Company, is set to open an assembly plant in Lagos, according to a statement from the company, Punch reports.
The Director of Policy and Planning, National Automotive Council, Mr. Luqman Mamudu, led a team who carried out a preliminary inspection on March 19, 2015 at the proposed assembly plant in Victoria Island.
He commended the efforts of CIG Motors (representative of GAC in Nigeria) towards establishing an assembly plant.
CIG Motors is the sole authorised distributor of the GAC brand of vehicles in Nigeria, and won the Nigeria Transport Award as the Best New Chinese Auto Brand 2013/2014, the statement said.
It said CIG Motors, whose parent company (Choice International) is based in Guangzhou city, had operated in Nigeria for about 17 years, marketing the Lontor brand of products.
According to the statement, GAC is one of the top five biggest Chinese automobile manufacturers with their headquarters in Guangzhou, China. Its factory was completed in September 2010, manufacturing 100,000 vehicles and accessories annually.
