A couple in Pennsylvania has been sentenced to seven years in prison for rejecting medicine in favor of their faith healing practices, which has led to the second death of one of their children from terminal illness.
Herbert and Catherine Schaible were convicted of withholding medical attention from their seven-month old child, Brandon, who died of pneumonia and dehydration in April.
In 2009, another son of theirs, Kent, died under similar circumstances in 2009 (he was two years old.)
A Philadelphia, Pennsylvania court has sentenced the couple to a three to seven year prison sentence on Wednesday. Philadelphia Common Pleas Judge Benjamin Lerner told the couple “You’ve killed your children. Not God, not your church, not your religious devotion…you.”
They have been convicted of involuntary manslaughter and child endangerment in the death of Kent. Kent died of bacterial pneumonia, and his parents had only prayed for him without contacting a doctor.
The Schaibles’ six surviving minor children have been placed under foster care.
