The CNN MultiChoice African Journalists of the Year awards has affirmed that Nigerian journalists are in the top echelon of the profession in Africa. This is as five journalists from Nigeria tops the list of the 31 finalists selected from 15 countries in Africa for the awards.

The five Nigerians on the shortlist includes Punch Newspaper's Femi Asu and Arukaino Umukoro; Premium Times editor, Ibanga Isine; Tribune newspaper's Adewale Emosu and Kọ́lá Túbọ̀sún, a blogger at kravula.com

The 2015 competition which is in its 20th year received nominations from 39 African Countries, including French and Portuguese speaking Africa. The top 5 nominees from Nigeria are closely followed by four nominees from Kenya.

Speaking at the event, the vice president and managing director of CNN international, Tonny Maddox said CNN is privileged to be involved in the initiative.

"The quality and breadth of entries in this, its 20th year is a testament to the CNN MultiChoice African Journalist Awards' position as the most prestigious recognition for journalism across the continent," he said.
