The government and Marxist rebels reached a deal on one of the most contentious points in their yearlong peace talks, both sides said Wednesday, reviving hopes they can resolve the remaining issues to end decades
of strife.
The agreement, which won't go into effect unless a full peace deal is signed, would allow the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, or FARC, to become a political party whose candidates could run for any office, including the presidency, according to a joint statement from rebel and government negotiators.
