ABUJA- THE Director- General, Budget Office, Dr Bright Okogwu disclosed yesterday that following incessant strikes by Nigeria workers, the nation has witnessed a salary increase to the tune of N1.7 trillion naira, just as he advocated that the Value Added Tax (VAT) which was currently put at 5% should be increased to 10%.

Speaking yesterday when he appeared before the Senator Adamu Aliero led Committee on Public Finance and Revenue at the on-going National Conference yesterday, Okogwu who briefed the Committee on how the Federal Government carries out its fiscal operations as well as the issues and challenges being faced, told the delegates that strikes by Nigeria workers pushed the salary bill to N1.7 trillion in 2011 from N857 billion in 2009.

Okogwu who informed the delegates that the office has been re-orienting the mind -sets of ministries, departments and agencies on budgeting process, stressed that the realignment of the budget carried out in 2012 made it possible to increase capital expenditure by 29.5% while that of 2013 increased it to 37.5%
