The statement said 17,172,297 persons, representing 75.8 per cent, were Ivorians, while 5,491,972 others, representing 24.2 per cent, were foreigners.
It said the result of the 2014 census represented a population growth of about 2.6 per cent.
"49.7 per cent of the population resides in urban areas, while about 50.3 per cent are in the rural areas. 51.7 per cent are men, while 48.3 per cent are women. Annual population growth rate was 2.6 per cent in 2014 against 3.8 per cent in 1975 and 3.3 per cent in 1998,’’ the statement said.
Speaking to newsmen in Abidjan on Wednesday, the Ivorian government’s spokesman, Bruno Kone, said 36.2 per cent of the population were between the ages of 15 and 34 years.
Bruno further said the census showed that Abidjan hosted 20 per cent of the country’s population with about 4,707,000 inhabitants.
The 2014 census was boycotted by supporters of the Ivorian Popular Front (FPI), party of former president Laurent Gbagbo.
The FPI, which publicly declared its rejection of the exercise, accused the government of planning to use its result for political purposes.
