Sports Cowrie, Merlin RFC Reach 1st President's Rugby Cup Semi Finals

Cowrie and Merlin Rugby Football Clubs have progressed to the semi finals of the maiden edition of the President Cup, which took off in grand style on Friday at the Onikan stadium.

Barewa RFC and Racing RFC are the final two that complete the four teams who will battle for the top prize on Saturday, as Cowrie RFC will battle Barewa RFC while Merlin will take on Racing.

Cowrie, who are the defending champions of the Independence 7s were unbeaten in all their group games, beating Merlins RFC from UK by 19points to 15 before, thrashed Gosar RFC 47 points to 0 and completed their superiortiy with a 26-0 spanking of Sabongari RFC to finish at the top of group A.

On the other hand, the Nigerian Police force Rugby team, whom many tipped to reach the final of the tourney failed to progress beyond the group stage.

Barewa RFC started their President Cup campaign on a bright note defeating Panthers RFC made up of foreign and home based Nigerian players by 17points to 5 and then winning their last game against Delta RFC by 24points to 0.

In the Plate semifinals Panthers will face Sabongeri RFC and Police will take on Gosar.

The Shield finals will take place between Delta RFC and Parakou RFC of Benin Republic.

The finals will commence by 11:00am on Saturday.‎
