Gov. Aliyu Wamakko of Sokoto State on Thursday pardoned 25 inmates of Sokoto Central Prison as part of activities to commemorate the 2014 Democracy Day.

Fourteen of the inmates were reportedly granted unconditional pardon.

The state Justice Commissioner, Alhaji Nuhu Adamu, who announced this in Sokoto, said the governor also donated N30,000 to each of the fourteen inmates who were released unconditionally, to enable them start life afresh.

According to him, eight inmates sentenced to life imprisonment, had their terms reduced to twenty five years each, while two others had their prison terms reduced to 20 years each.

The commissioner said an inmate, condemned to death, will now serve life sentence.

``The gesture is exercised by the governor based on the powers conferred on him by Section 212 of the 1999 Constitution.''

Adamu warned those pardoned to live responsible life to avoid returning back to the prison.
