As the story goes, African Confidential, an online platform, published a story that said there was a plan by the military to replace president Jonathan’s administration with an ‘interim national government’, to be led by senator David Mark (because of his military background.)
DailyPost reports that the Chief of Defense Staff, Air Chief Marshal Alex Badeh, has dismissed the story yesterday as unfounded.
“Badeh, however described the story as a wicked lie meant to cause rancor in the country,” DailyPost says. He said this while he was receiving the DG of the National Orientation Agency (NOA), Mike Omeri at the Abuja Defense headquarters for the formal presentation of the Nigerian Centenary Flag to the Military.
Alex Badeh said the military was professional and “had no option but to love Nigeria” and do its best to ensure security and protection of lives and property in the country.
He expressed shock at the rumor of a coup, emphasizing that the military wasn’t averse to the idea of a democracy in the country.
“Why should anyone be thinking in negative fashion? Tell them we will not do it. Those rumoring coup must be living elsewhere and not in Nigeria. The Armed Forces are defenders of democracy.
“We are an arm of democracy, so how can an arm of democracy work against the democracy that we are part of?” the CDS said.
