Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump has called for a halt to Muslims entering the US, in the wake of the deadly California shootings.

In a campaign statement, he said a "total and complete" shutdown should remain until the US authorities "can figure out" Muslim attitudes to the US.

At a rally in South Carolina hours later, frontrunner Mr Trump repeated the pledge, to loud cheers.

Criticism from the White House and other Republicans was swift.

Mr Trump's comments were contrary to US values and its national security interests, a statement from the White House said.

Republican Jeb Bush, also running for president, said the New York businessman was "unhinged".

Mr Trump's statement was delivered as the US comes to terms with its deadliest terror attack since 9/11.

Last week a Muslim couple, believed to have been radicalised, opened fire and killed 14 people at a health centre in San Bernardino.

Care to explain further?
You can say and do anything you want and people will nod their heads in agreement when all they care about is cash. Mr Trump businesses should just be boycotted by anyone who cares about anything other than money, but the very people he is insulting will be the first in the queue to worship in his alter of cash and say how inspiring he is

You are quite right. Anyways, he his entitled to his opinion. It is left for Americans to decide if he's fit for the office or not. I must say though, despite his braggadocio and racist/xenophobic remarks, he's got quite a following. He is currently the front-running GOP candidate, way above Carson and the likes.

There are some opinions that we can not express especially when you are running for such important office. There are also some opinions he will not dare express in America - would be the end of his politics and business. He is targeting vulnerable groups and pushing his agenda of hate!
