The Ebonyi State Environmental Protection Agency (EBSEPA) has abolished the use of bucket latrines in the state.

Dr Okeh Okeh, general manager of EBSEPA said that landlords and other property owners must henceforth install standard water system toilets in their buildings.

"This is part of the government’s campaign to attain sustainable environment and waste management in the state," he said.

Okeh also advised the people to bag domestic waste and put them in standard refuse bins to avoid defacing the environment. He pointed out that bad waste management practices could result in land, water and air pollution, which could lead to respiratory problems.

"A city with poor sanitation, smelly and with waste materials all over, does not attract good people, investors and tourists.

"EBSEPA has fully sensitised the inhabitants of the state to the need for waste management.

"This is done through house to house sanitary inspection and waste collection by the Pollution Control and Waste Management Department," Okeh said.
