Politics Enugu Impeachment: Lawmakers Urge CJ to Constitute Panel to Investigate Deputy Governor

The Enugu State House of Assembly on Thursday adopted a resolution to investigate the Deputy Governor, Mr Sunday Onyebuchi’s, reply to the notice of impeachment against him.

The Speaker, Mr Eugene Odo, said that by the virtue of the support for the investigation by 20 lawmakers, the next line of action was the constitutional provision of Section 188 (5).

"Within seven days of the passage of a motion under the foregoing provision of this section, the Chief Judge of the state shall at the request of the speaker of the House of Assembly, appoint a panel of seven persons who are of unquestionable integrity, not being members of any public service, legislative House or political party to investigate the allegation as provided in this section,’’ he said

The resolution sponsored by the Leader of the house, Mr Sunday Ude-Okoye (PDP-Awgu North) and 19 others, was adopted at plenary following Onyebuchi’s reply to the notice of impeachment served him.

"Whereas the Enugu State House of Assembly received a notice of impeachment for gross misconduct against the deputy governor, Mr Sunday Onyebuchi on July 22, 2014.

"Whereas the deputy governor was served through a substituted means on Thursday, July 24, 2014 and the deputy governor sent in a reply to the allegation on Wednesday, July 30.

"Whereas the Enugu State House of Assembly received the reply of the deputy governor, I hereby move a motion that the matter be now investigated in line with the provision of the Constitution in Section 188 (3),’’ he said.

The deputy governor’s reply was not read at plenary.
