Erisco Foods Ltd is planning to make Nigeria a hub for tomato paste production in Africa and the world.
The company says it has concluded plans to launch massive tomato plantations in Sokoto, Jigawa, Katsina and Zamfara states, President of the company, Chief Eric Umeofia, said.
“This is in order to kick-start his vision of developing the tomato industry from the basic modernised plantations to setting up of refinery plants for conversion of the harvested tomatoes into concentrate,” Umeofia stated.
He said the concentrate produced by Erisco Foods will lead to the stoppage of importation of foreign concentrate for use in Nigeria and urged President Muhammadu Buhari to embark on policies that will drive local production of tomatoes.
Umeofia stated that the CBN’s policy on foreign exchange has to some extent assisted local manufacturers, saying: “We don’t talk about closing down our factories again because of the single action of CBN policy on foreign exchange.”
