A former member of the House of Representatives, Hon. Uche Onyeagucha, has advocated that the voting age in Nigeria should be reduced from 18 to 16 years. This is as he called for the immediate enforcement of provisions of the Electoral Act that protect persons with disabilities, saying such category of persons should enjoy special privileges.

Onyeagucha spoke in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital, yesterday, while delivering a paper at the annual lecture of the state chapter of the National Association of Seadogs (NAS) with the theme: “Electoral Process as a Precursor to Good Governance”.

Onyeagucha, who was in the House of Representatives between 2003 and 2007, said many children complete their secondary education at ages 15 and 16, pointing out that they have become more informed with the knowledge of Information Technology. His words, “The fact that one is older in age does not make one more educated or more informed.
