The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) said that it had busted a luggage pilfering syndicate that operated in the Murtala Mohammed Airport, Lagos State. They confirmed the arrest of one Okereobede Chiwendu, 38, allegedly a member of the syndicate.

The pilfering had generated some controversy and continued unabated for some time, leading the Crime and Investigation unit of FAAN’s Aviation Security Service (AVSEC) to be put on alert and investigated the issue further.
Chiwendu was identified as an employee of Check Port Security, the official airline security of Emirate Airlines and apprehended due to the closed circuit television (CCTV) capturing him in the act.

The suspect later confessed to giving one Mr. Oriola Afeez, a NAHCO staff permission to go ahead with pilfering on the parked aircraft, while Chiwendu gave him protection inside the aircraft bulk holds. Oriola is still at large.

Mr. Chiwendu has been charged with conspiracy and stealing.
