Facebook Quietly Ends its E-mail System, Says “Most People Haven’t Been Using their Facebook Address”
Facebook.com has quietly shut down its three-year old mailing service that gave users the “@facebook.com” email addresses.

This means that emails sent to your “@facebook.com” email addresses will be automatically forwarded to the personal email address you used to sign up for Facebook.

A Facebook spokesperson said “we’re making this change because most people haven’t been using their Facebook email address.”

This shut-down will happen in early march.

The service began in November 2010, and came under criticism in 2012 when Facebook took it upon itself to replace users’ regular email addresses in their profiles with their “@facebook.com” email addresses. The company later reversed that change to satisfy its users.

This move is coming on the heels of Facebook’s impromptu purchase of the WhatsApp messaging app for $19bn.
