A Tunisian, Fatma Ben Guefrache has emerged winner of a beauty pageant exclusively for Muslims; the 2014 World Muslimah Awards in Indonesia.
Guefrache fought off competition from 17 other finalists including a doctor and a computer scientist at the grand finale in Yogyakarta.
Speaking shortly after she won the pageant Guefrache called for a free Palestine and said:
"May almighty Allah help me in this mission, and free Palestine, please, please, free Palestine and the Syrian people,” she said amidst tears.
The 18 finalists were mandated to wear Muslim headscarfs and were not judged solely on their appearance but on how well they recited verses of the Holy Qur'an as well as their views on Islam in the moderm society
“We want to see that they understand everything about the Islamic way of life — from what they eat, what they wear, how they live their lives,” said one of the organisers, Jameyah Sheriff.
