Metro FEC Okays Draft Bill to Ban Smoking - Tribune

THE Federal Executive Council (FEC), on Wednesday, approved a draft Tobacco Bill 2014 which prescribes N50,000 fine or six months imprisonment or both for people who smoke cigarette in areas designated as non-smoking zones.

The draft bill also prescribes that any tobacco company that violates the provision of the bill will pay between N1 million and N5 million as fine even as its chief executives could additionally be imprisoned for a period of one to two years.

This was disclosed by the Minister of Heath, Professor Onyebuchi Chukwu, while briefing State House correspondents at the end of the FEC meeting presided over by President Goodluck Jonathan at the Presidential Villa.

The draft bill is now to be forwarded to the National Assembly as an executive bill for their consideration and passage into law.
