Rio Ferdinand and Steven Gerrard heavily criticised Lionel Messi for his part in Barcelona's 4-0 thrashing at PSG in the Champions League.

The Argentinian was uncharacteristically poor throughout at the Parc des Princes as Unai Emery's side showed more hunger and desire for every loose ball in the first leg of the Last 16 tie.

Messi was hustled off the ball in the build-up to Julian Draxler's goal to epitomise his evening and Ferdinand criticised his reaction.

"His reaction there was poor," the former Manchester United defender told BT Sport. "All night he was sloppy.

"He looked dejected and bereft of ideas, [but] he’s human."

Gerrard echoed that sentiment by pointing out an absence of effort from the 29-year-old, who failed to touch the ball once inside PSG's box - a first this season.

"He showed zero effort. No reaction all night," Gerrard added on BT Sport's Champions League coverage.

The second leg, in three weeks on March 8, will be an uphill battle now with an away goal meaning the Blaugrana will have to score at least six.
