Chris Omeleze, a former police sergeant has been dismissed by the Lagos State Police Command. He had been caught on camera demanding a bribe of N25,000 from a motorist.

The video footage displayed an unidentified male motorist pleading with Omeleze to please accept N2,000 for a traffic offence, but the sergeant refused. The sergeant, who was on the passenger seat, placed a call to his superior on the telephone, saying the motorist’s car must be impounded for refusing to “cooperate.”

The policeman was arrested after the Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Abubarkar, saw the video which went viral on the internet. He has faced a panel of policemen who found the sergeant guilty of misconduct and recommended him for dismissal.

Omeleze, who had “served” the force for 21 years, said it was the work of the devil. The police stated that such behaviour would not be condoned and members of the public are advised to always report such cases.
