Thousands of reindeers are killed yearly by drivers driving on dark roads in Finland. To curb this, herders in Finland are now spraying their reindeer with reflective paint to help drivers see them in the dark.

The paint used is now being tested on furs and antlers to see how much it can hold up against the various weather conditions.

"The aim is to prevent traffic accidents. The spray is being tested on fur at the moment, but it may be even more effective on the antlers, because they are seen from every side," says Anne Ollila, chairwoman of the Reindeer Herders Association.

The Helsingen Sanomat newspaper reports that most incidents happen in the dark months of November and December, where roads are likely to become icy.

The Finnish Game and Fisheries Research Institute says as many as 4,000 reindeer die in traffic accidents yearly in Finland.
